Airborne particulate matter (PM) or dust can consist of many different materials in different sizes.
Our range of PM monitors and samplers are designed not only to measure the mass concentration of particulate matter but also to provide valuable additional information about the number of particles, as well as the size distribution and the chemical composition of the particulate material.
We offer samplers which collect PM on a filter or other substrate for subsequent weighing or analysis at a later time and monitors which provide real time information. Both are available as compact battery or solar powered units or mains powered units. Many are completely automated, while others require a degree of user intervention

The TEOM Series Monitors are based on an accurate and precise direct mass measurment principle which is capable of measuring the mass of particulate matter sampled onto a filter. The TEOM uses the same gravimetric measurement technique as the standard methods required in Europe and the USA but provides information on a near real time basis for regulatory monitoring. The Model 1400 is suitable for use in many air qulaity monitoring applications and is by farthe most popular and prevalent monitor used in the UK air qulaity networks. Where you are required to measure semi-volatile components or if you must show equivalence to the new EC standards we reccomend that you use the FDMS version (Model 8500). This is available as an upgrade to existing TEOM 1400 units or as a stand alone system. It can be deployed in almost any existing air quality monitoring station including compact roadside systems.
TEOM - FDMS is the right choice for PM monitoring in ambient air as it is the ONLY system which provides information about the nature and concentration of airborne particulate matter and has been shown to meet the requirements of the European Method for Determining Equivalence for Particulate Matter. This means the FDMS agrees with the European Gravimetric Standard Method and provides results which are both accurate and precise WITHOUT the use of a so called 'correction factor' for PM10 and PM2.5. The TEOM FDMS was the ONLY system shown to demonstrate this in UK goverment tests and is now used in the UK's National Air Quality Network.

Rack Mount Aethalometer
The 'rack mount' model is constructed in a standard 19-inch enclosed chassis. This aethalometer model is most commonly used in air monitoring network stations, providing continuous unattended operation. The instrument simultaneously samples and measures the mass concentration of black carbon particles in the air. A digital display/keypad combination interface is used to operate, monitor, calibrate, and service the instrument. The measurement data are stored within the instrument on removable media (compact flash or floppy disc drive options available). An analog channel outputs a signal for communicating the real-time mass concentration to an external data logger. This analog channel can also be programmed to communicate an instrument status condition.
Rack-Mount Aethalometer® Model AE22 Dual-wavelength
The AE22 Aethalometer measures the optical absorption of carbon particles at two wavelengths: 880 nm (IR), quantitative for the mass of ?Black' or Elemental Carbon; and 370 nm (UV), indicating the presence of aromatic organic compounds such as are found in wood smoke, biomass-burning smoke, and tobacco smoke. The Real-time measurements can be made with time resolution from one second to one hour. Performing the dual wavelength measurement is important in determining the sources of airborne black carbon particles (ie. diesel exhaust vs. wood smoke combustion). The instrument is widely used in monitoring applications involving human exposure to localized, community-based sources of air pollution.
Rack-Mount Aethalometer® Model AE31 "Spectrum" Seven-wavelength
The AE31 Aethalometer measures optical absorption by suspended aerosol particles at seven wavelengths, from 370 nm (UV) to 950 nm (IR). Real-time measurements of particle concentrations can be made with a time resolution of two minutes to one hour. Interpretation of the differences in optical response across the wavelength spectrum reveal information regarding aerosol size distribution, physical properties, and assist in identifying the primary components. This instrument is widely used in monitoring studies involving large scale, regional air pollution problems.

Portable Aethalometer® Model AE42
The AE42 Portable Aethalometer measures optical absorption by suspended aerosol particles at two wavelengths: 880 nm (IR), quantitative for the mass of ?Black' Carbon; and 370 nm (UV), indicating aromatic organic compounds. The instrument's analytical performance is identical to the "full size" AE22, but it is constructed in a small portable case with an internal battery providing several hours of mobile operation. The AE42 can also be operated from an AC transformer or by cables from an external battery or automobile power outlet. This instrument is widely used for studying indoor air quality, and for the mobile mapping of the air quality impacts of localized sources.
The Portable Aethalometer may also be supplied with "seven wavelength Spectrum" optics upon request. The AE42's can be supplied with a GPS position receiver kit that attaches to the instrument's COM port. The instrument can then record the GPS position input data for mapping in mobile or survey use.

OT21 - Optical Transmissometer
The Optical Transmissometer analyzes filter-collected samples for Aerosol Black Carbon ('BC' or 'EC') using 880 nm light, and Aromatic Carbon ('OC') using 370 nm light, to match the optical analysis of the standard Aethalometer®.
Accepts 47, 37 and 25mm diameter filters. Barcode scanner option is available for sample identification. The instrument can be connected to personal computer using included Data Logger software. Constructed in lightweight, bench top case with operation from 12 V DC: line power supply for operation from 110-220 V AC.
The transmissometer analysis is non-destructive, allowing for further chemical analysis to be performed. The instrument analysis process is fully automated and requires no support gases or consumables. A second filter position inside the analysis chamber allows for simlulateous reference (blank) measurement to be made along with the sample measurement.
Analysis results are displayed on the front main screen and communcated externally via COM port to a computer. The data is output in a .csv compatible format for easy importing into spreadsheet application.

MicroAeth Model AE51
The microAeth Model AE51 is the world's first ever real-time, pocket-sized Black Carbon aerosol monitor. The instrument can be placed virtually anywhere and provide real-time information about the concentration of black carbon in the atmosphere. The microAeth incorporates the same aethalometer measurement technology which has been used worldwide for over 25 years.
The instrument can operate continuously for up to 24 hours on a single battery charge. The air sample is collected and analyzed within the microAeth instrument on a quartz fiber filter strip. Optional filter strips are available which contain unique serial numbers. The serial number can be used to track the filter strip following its use in the microAeth for archiving and possible further chemical analysis in a laboratory. All data, including instrument status and BC measurements, are stored using on-board Flash memory. The microAeth connects to a PC using a supplied USB cable and interfaces with the intuitive microAethCOM PC-based software program. The software is used to program the microAeth, view current instrument conditions, and download the collected data. The software also provides Quickview graphs to evaluate data and diagnostic information immediately.
